Edinburgh, with cobbled streets, historic charm, and stunning architecture, comes alive during the festive season. From bright, dazzling Christmas lights to panoramic city views, the city offers an enchanting winter wonderland for locals and visitors alike. Here are some of the best locations to soak up the holiday magic.

           1. Princes Street Gardens and Edinburgh Christmas Markets

First on the list is the heart of Edinburgh’s festive celebrations, Princes Street Gardens. The gardens transform into a ‘winter wonderland’ every December. The wonderland is full of great attractions. The Big Wheel provides views of the whole city. The Starflyer for thrill seekers, travels high, almost to the height of the Scott Monument and flies in circles. A calm walk through the gardens with festive lights and great photo opportunities of the city. This a great place during Christmas and leads into one the most well known Christmas markets worldwide. The Edinburgh Christmas Market is a must-visit, with twinkling fairy lights and rows of wooden chalets selling handmade gifts, festive treats, mulled wine and more.

The Big Wheel. For me The Big Wheel is the highlight of this ‘winter wonderland’ , something that I do every year. The views at the top are beautiful, you can see George Street, Edinburgh Castle, The Mound and are almost within touching distance of The Scott Monument.

           2. George Street

George Street is possibly the most lit street during the Christmas period. The street boasts an annual light installation that often includes stunning projections and themed displays. Recently the Christmas markets have extended to George Street which brings the lit up wooden chalets and festive gifts to the street. The pop-up ice rink is located on George Street, for those that enjoy ice-skating outdoors in a rink full of christmas spirit this is the place to go. It is fun for the full family, even the little ones. For those that struggle with skating, there are penguins on skates to support. Beyond this there are great light displays put on by businesses up and down the street. No list of Edinburgh’s Christmas lights would be complete without mentioning The Dome. Renowned for its opulent decorations, the exterior columns are wrapped in glittering lights, and the interior is a spectacle of Christmas trees and lavish baubles. One of the many photo opportunities throughout George street and one that really highlights the beauty of Christmas in Edinburgh.

           3. Castle Street

Located off Princes Street, Castle Street, which is well named with amazing views of Edinburgh Castle. Castle Street often features smaller, more local Christmas markets, full of handcrafted delights. This is a great location to get christmas gifts that are made right here in Edinburgh. As it is with the rest of the city at Christmas time, this is a great location to see beautiful lights and decorations, bringing to life the street. This street also provides a unique perspective of Edinburgh Castle, which can often be seen illuminated in festive colors during December. It’s another great place for snapping holiday photos.

This ticketed event offers a magical experience with an immersive light trail. If you have ever been to the Botanics during the day, you will know it is already a great spectacle. Well, during ‘Christmas at the Botanics’ the walk through the gardens is a sparkling array of light. From sparkling tunnels of light to artistic installations that play shadows and colors, ‘Christmas at the Botanics’ is a sensory delight for all ages. Grab a seasonal snack from one of the hand-picked street food vendors who bring an indulgent twist to tempting treats on offer. Last time I went I indulged in a caramel flavoured marshmallow. The fires next to the vendor provide a great source of heat, as well as the place to toast a marshmallow with someone special and enjoy the great taste of whatever flavour you picked! A visit to the trail is also a great way of contributing to fund the important plant conservation work of the Botanics, which is a registered Scottish charity.

Now, for those seeking a panoramic view of the city’s festive glow, a climb to the top of Calton Hill is well worth the effort. From this vantage point, you can see the most beautiful lights in the city. From the festive decorations put up by The Balmoral and the iconic clock, you can see all along Princes Street, George Street, and even Edinburgh Castle where the whole city is a true winter wonderland. If you catch the right time, you can see the whole city lit up in an array of beautiful Christmas spirit.

Edinburgh’s festive lights and breathtaking views offer something for everyone, from romantic strolls to family-friendly attractions. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, these spots are sure to fill you with holiday cheer.

           Why Choose a Winter Tour?

Winter is a quieter season for tourism in Scotland, and the reduced crowds mean you’ll have more personal space to enjoy the sites at a leisurely pace. The beauty of the winter weather in Scotland makes for many unique days. From great sunshine “golden hours” to snow covered streets and the beauty of snow. The weather is sure to provide a magical backdrop to Edinburgh’s historic architecture and surrounding landscapes. Our winter tours are thoughtfully designed to maximise the shorter daylight hours, ensuring that you get the most out of every moment, even in the heart of winter. And if you are visiting in December Scotland’s festive markets, winter flavours and Christmas lights are definitely going to make the experience more magical!

In fact, the vibrant and festive nature of Edinburgh is one of my favourite things during, what is usually, a colder and darker time of year. Two of my favourite things about winter in Scotland, Edinburgh specifically, are the Princes Street Gardens winter lights and George Street’s festive decorations. Princes Street Gardens is great because you can walk through the gardens and witness a stunning light display with trees that are lumiated and festive with decorations all around. It benefits from leading into the winter markets which is a great place to stop and grab a hot chocolate or snack before my second favourite place, George Street. George Street is typically where the outdoor ice rink is placed so there is no shortage of seasonal aspects. For me though, again, the bright lights and decorations bring George Street to life during the winter and really emphasise that festive atmosphere in Edinburgh.

Autumn in Edinburgh is a magical time. As the vibrant energy of the summer festivals fades, the city transforms into a picturesque view of golden leaves, crisp air, and historic streets waiting to be explored. September and October are ideal months for visitors who want to enjoy the beauty and history of Edinburgh at a more relaxed pace, without the hustle and bustle of peak tourist season. Here's your guide to making the most of Edinburgh this autumn.

1. Soak in the Autumn Sun with Scenic Walks

Edinburgh’s parks and landscapes take on a new life in autumn, offering beautiful spots to enjoy the autumnal colours. Begin your day with a peaceful stroll through Princes Street Gardens, where you’ll be surrounded by trees in vibrant shades of red and gold, all against the stunning backdrop of Edinburgh Castle.

For those looking for a bit more adventure, a walk up Arthur’s Seat or Calton Hill is a must. These iconic spots provide panoramic views of the city, and in autumn, the landscape is covered in a warm golden light, making the views even better. Alternatively, stroll through the Royal Botanic Garden, where the peaceful atmosphere and changing leaves offer a quiet retreat from the city streets.

           2. Explore Edinburgh’s Historic Sites

With the summer crowds gone, autumn is the perfect time to explore Edinburgh’s historic landmarks without the long lines and rush. Start with a visit to Edinburgh Castle, where you can immerse yourself in Scotland’s rich history while enjoying unobstructed views of the city from the castle view points.

Next, head down the Royal Mile to Holyrood Palace, the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland. Take your time exploring the State Apartments and the hauntingly beautiful ruins of Holyrood Abbey, set against the backdrop of autumnal gardens. For a quieter, off-the-beaten-path experience, don’t miss Dean Village, a picturesque area along the Water of Leith, where you can stroll along cobbled streets and enjoy the serenity of this hidden gem.

We offer tours of both these beautiful locations feel free to check them out-

           3. Cozy Cafés and Indulge in Autumn Flavours

After a day of exploring, there’s nothing better than escaping the crisp autumn air by retreating to one of Edinburgh’s cozy cafés. From rustic coffee shops to stylish bakeries, Edinburgh’s café scene comes alive in autumn with seasonal offerings. One of my favourites is Room and Rumours, tucked away on East Market Street, not far from The Royal Mile. They also offer delicious cakes and pastries to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Another one of my favourites is The Milkman, located on Cockburn Street. This coffee shop is small but full of character. If you are lucky enough you can get the window seat and watch the world go by as you enjoy your coffee. Or even drop in for a cake and coffee to prepare yourself for a day of exploring Edinburgh.

           4. Enjoy Edinburgh’s Whisky

Edinburgh’s pub culture truly shines during the autumn months. The city’s cozy, dimly lit pubs offer the perfect refuge from chilly autumn evenings, with crackling fires, hearty food, and, of course, a dram of whisky. Begin your pub tour with a visit to The Sheep Heid Inn, one of Scotland’s oldest pubs, located in the charming village of Duddingston. With its cozy interiors and traditional decor, it’s the ideal spot to enjoy a pint or two.

For whisky lovers, head to The Whiski Rooms on North Bank Street, renowned for its extensive whisky selection and locally sourced produce. Whether you’re a whisky connoisseur or a newcomer, the knowledgeable staff will guide you through their vast collection. Alternatively, experience whisky in a new way by joining a whisky tasting at The Scotch Whisky Experience, where you can learn about Scotland’s iconic drink while sampling whiskies from various regions.

           5. Photograph the City’s Autumnal Beauty

Edinburgh is a photographer’s dream year-round, but autumn offers something truly special. The golden hues of the trees, combined with the city’s historic architecture, create perfect photo opportunities at every turn. Head to Calton Hill at sunset for stunning views of the skyline, where the soft autumn light highlights iconic landmarks like the Scotts Monument and the spires of the Old Town.

For a more intimate setting, visit Dean Village, where the historic stone buildings and tree-lined riverbanks make for a picture-perfect autumn scene. Explore the winding streets of the Old Town, capturing the contrast between the mediaeval architecture and the warm autumn colours. You can take a customised tour with us where we can show you all the best spots over Edinburgh -

All my recent blog posts have been about Edinburgh Tour Guides and what we are up to. We have been busy welcoming visitors and making their trips to Edinburgh and Scotland memorable through all our pre-made and some custom tours. We are very lucky in Edinburgh to be one of the most historic and beautiful cities in the world (not biased at all!). If you have only one day in Edinburgh, the best way to discover these historic beauties is venturing from Edinburgh Castle to The Palace of Holyrood House down the Royal Mile. Although, some of the best spots can be found just off The Royal Mile.

Edinburgh Castle is top of my list of things to do on The Royal Mile. Edinburgh Castle dominates the city’s skyline and offers panoramic views of the surrounding area. This historic fortress has played a pivotal role in Scotland’s history and houses Scottish Crown Jewels and the Stone of Destiny. A visit to the castle is a must, not only for the rich history, but for the amazing views of the city. (Secret tip: the best pictures of Edinburgh Castle are from The Grassmarket)

A vibrant and enchanting destination that captures the essence of the city's historic charm. With its sweeping curve, colourful buildings, and variety of independent shops and eateries, this iconic street offers a unique blend of the old and the new. I fully believe there is something for everyone on this street, whether you're exploring its quirky boutiques, savouring local delicacies, or simply soaking in the atmosphere. For me, it is the picturesque nature of the street that makes it worthy of a spot on this list.

Tucked beneath the towering Edinburgh Castle, the Grassmarket is a historic and lively square in Edinburgh's Old Town that pulses with life and stories of the past. Once a bustling marketplace and the site of public executions, today it's a vibrant hub filled with cafes, pubs, and shops. The cobblestone streets and surrounding medieval architecture create an inviting atmosphere for visitors to explore. If you have time, I would recommend to climb the stairs at The Vennel, in my opinion the best view of the Castle is here.

Greyfriars Bobby is one of Edinburgh's most beloved legends, symbolising loyalty and love. The story goes that the small Skye Terrier captured the hearts of locals when, after his owner's death in 1858, he guarded his master's grave in Greyfriars Kirkyard. Today, a bronze statue of Bobby stands just outside the churchyard. The story of Greyfriars Bobby is a touching reminder of the deep bond between humans and their canine companions, making it a must-see for anyone exploring Edinburgh's rich history.

St Giles' Cathedral, also known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, is a majestic and historic landmark that stands proudly on the Royal Mile. With its stunning crown-shaped steeple and rich Gothic architecture, it has been at the heart of Edinburgh's spiritual life for nearly 900 years. Inside, visitors are greeted by beautiful stained-glass windows, intricate stonework, and the famous Thistle Chapel. Every one of the guides at Edinburgh Tour Guides has a different favourite window inside.

One of the oldest houses on the Royal Mile, John Knox House is associated with the Protestant Reformer John Knox. This 15th-century building is now a museum that offers insights into the turbulent times of the Scottish Reformation. The house’s period furnishings and artefacts make it a fascinating stop.

The Museum of Edinburgh is a treasure trove of the city's rich history, located in the heart of the Royal Mile. Housed in a charming 16th-century building, the museum offers a journey through Edinburgh's past, showcasing a fascinating collection of artefacts. Among its highlights is the collar and bowl of Greyfriars Bobby, as well as exhibits that delve into the city's social and cultural heritage. With its captivating displays and well-preserved setting, the Museum of Edinburgh provides an engaging glimpse into the stories that have shaped the Edinburgh we have today.

This elegant 17th-century church is the parish church for the Palace of Holyrood House and Edinburgh Castle. Canongate Kirk’s simple, serene interior contrasts with many of the city’s more ornate churches. The adjacent graveyard is the final resting place of notable figures, including the poet Robert Fergusson and the economist Adam Smith.

Located at the foot of Edinburgh's Royal Mile, is a striking example of modern architecture in contrast to Edinburgh’s mediaeval old town. Designed by Catalan architect Enric Miralles and completed in 2004, the building's unique design features a blend of natural materials, organic shapes, and innovative forms inspired by the Scottish landscape and culture. Inside, visitors can explore the Debating Chamber, where Scotland's MSPs discuss and shape the nation's laws. The building also hosts exhibitions and public tours, offering insight into Scotland's political life and the creative vision behind its design.

Whatever your interests are: architecture, history, whisky, or anything in between, The Royal Mile offers an unforgettable journey through the heart of Edinburgh. These are my top 10 locations on the Royal Mile, but trust me when I say there are many, many more. I didn't even mention any of Edinburgh’s famous closes' which can provide some amazing history and photos (honourable mention below). If you want to see and hear more about Edinburgh,

Just like that we are into July 2024! July is one of the busiest months here in Edinburgh. July brings with it the sun, the parties, the hill walks, the outdoor adventures and much more! We have a few things going on this month, our guide Sam is undertaking “The One Million Step Challenge” which will help raise funds for Diabetes UK. We also had Steve recently raising money for Scottish Mountain Rescue by aiming to travel 143 miles by bike in one month. These events are keeping some of our guides extra busy in what is already a busy month showing off our wonderful Edinburgh. Although, you never want to wish away the summer, July leaves us just one month out from The Fringe Festival and The Royal Military Tattoo. It also leaves us one month out from The First Scottish International Conference on Armed Forces in Society which we have partnered up with

. The conference takes place at the tail end of The Fringe Festival and is set to be a combination of seminars, workshops and public events. The Centre is currently the only research, education, public engagement, and practice unit in Scotland dedicated to the armed forces. It is a military research Centre based in a recognised Gold Covenant University working with key military stakeholders across Scotland, the UK and internationally through various networks related to armed forces transition, mental health, and wellbeing. When we had the opportunity to support this we absolutely had to get involved given the rich culture and history of Scotland's military. Now, we look forward to the conference which takes place August 22 - Aug 28.

Before the conference takes place however, we have the joy of experiencing Edinburgh’s renowned Fringe Festival, which takes place over three weeks in August (2nd - 26th). The Fringe Festival is great as it offers a chance to experience an extraordinary array of creative arts from around the world. Artists and performers of all kinds take to hundreds of stages across the city, presenting shows that cater to every taste. During the Fringe, venues spring up all over Edinburgh, transforming spaces such as theaters, bars, parks, tents, and even shipping containers into stages ready for performances of all shapes and sizes. The festival brings an explosion of color, excitement, and vibrancy to the city, reimagining Edinburgh into a dazzling celebration of art.

As well as The Fringe Festival we also have The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo which is an unparalleled experience, bringing together the best of the British military with international dance, music, and more. This iconic event is set against the stunning backdrop of Edinburgh Castle and features nearly 1,000 performers throughout its run. With a history spanning over 70 years, The Tattoo began as small shows in Princes Street Gardens and the Castle Esplanade. The event's origins trace back to an invitation from The Lord Provost of Edinburgh, who asked the General Officer Commanding the Army to create a military show to coincide with the Edinburgh International Festival. These early performances quickly gained popularity, evolving into the internationally renowned show that today attracts over 220,000 live spectators each year.

. Steve also recently raised funds for Scottish Mountain Rescue. Steve had the challenge of traveling 143 miles in one month by any way of outdoor travel (swim, run, bike, kayak etc). This is a cause that is very close to us all. We lost a friend to the mountains three years ago. Mountain rescue had searched for him but sadly not all rescues are successful. He was returned to his family with dignity and compassion. Although without this organisation many more would possibly be lost. Steve set a goal of £143 for the 143 miles but managed to raise far more than this goal. You can read more about Steve’s challenge and support the cause

. Well, since February we have completed 8 multi-day tours with more booked in for August and September. We absolutely love multi-day tours, we get to meet new people, learn their interests, cater the tour to them and ultimately help people have the best experience of Scotland. We don’t want to give away all the secrets but some highlights of these multi-day tours we have done include - horse riding, stone circle discoveries, stunning views, seeing young deer and even some highland cow feeding. As well as doing all these amazing things we are still experiencing new hotels and discovering some parts of Scotland we had forgotten re-igniting our passion for tourism. Let me tell you, I don’t think we could ever fall out of love with Scotland and the photos below show you why!

Sam, Steve and Kyle travelled up to Inverurie to attend a Whisky Ambassador course and examination. Inverurie is around 3 hours away from Edinburgh, and if you’re going to go that far may as well make the day out of it (as a tourist company should!). On the way to Inverurie we stopped at The Kinclaven Bluebell woods which is just beautiful. If you go at the right time of year the Blue Bells in bloom are mesmerising, like something out of a fairy tale. In the wood there is also a very mystical tree, in this large wood filled of trees slim and high, stands one tree that seems magical. It is if it has been split in two and is larger than the rest with no other trees surrounding it.

We had 2 more stops on our way to Inverurie, Castle Fraser and East Aquhorthies Stone Circle. Very different purposes and places but both spectacular. Castle Fraser is down a long driveway, situated in the middle of a large grass field. It has been designed beautifully, with a grand arch entrance where you can see the whole castle. This is one of the few Castles of Scotland where you are allowed to walk on the roof and see down as if it were still a castle in use. It is actually one of the largest tower houses in Scotland with some parts dating back as early as 1450.

Our next stop was East Aquhorthies Stone Circle. This is one of Scotland’s best preserved recumbent stone circles and still to this day people wonder what its original purpose may have been. Although we don’t know a lot about Scotlands stone circles, this one appears to have been chosen by colours there are different coloured stones at different parts of the circle. Did this have meaning in the past? Is it a coincidence? We may never know.

The next day Sam, Steve and Kyle undertook the whisky course where they learned more than just the basics about whisky. They learned differences in tastes, colours, aromas and how the slightest change can impact the entire flavour. Through the day they gained further knowledge in the history of Scotch whisky, differences in the regional distilleries and even specific processes and timings of different distilled casks.

Not all whisky is Scotch but all Scotch is whisky.

With the new found knowledge they all sat the exam and passed. We won’t tell you who got the highest marks, but with three out of three passes Edinburgh Tour Guides now have three accredited Whisky Ambassadors. With the 3 accredited ambassadors this now means that the company - Edinburgh Tour Guides - is now also an accredited Whisky Ambassador. Look out for some

February Update

February has been a busy month for us, we purchased a new vehicle, have been sampling Scottish cuisine, experiencing new hotels and planning multi-day itineraries.

A Busy February for Edinburgh Tour Guides

Edinburgh Tour Guides, are now beginning preparations for the busy months ahead. As a tour company the busiest months are through spring and summer, so we have to get all our affairs in order before the busy season starts. Usually February is when we plan, organise, sort admin, accounts, the boring side of our business, however this year we have already started the season with multiple trips up into The Highlands and many tours in and around Edinburgh (and its only February?).

Every season is different, back in 2017 (Pre covid… I know remember those days?) we had one of our busiest seasons to date, almost every day was fully booked up full with a mixture of walking tours in Edinburgh and driven day trips out of the city. It was so busy our guides would pass each other most days at Edinburgh Castle with their private groups. So we label 2017 the season of walking tours for Edinburgh Tour Guides.

Fast forward through to last year when the world started to open up again and travelling was back on the menu. Travelling became fun again it was back to exploring, adventuring, learning and experiencing cultures. This was clear to us as a company as we were booked full with day tours; Culloden, Loch Ness, Outlander, Stirling, St Andrews. Last years season was full of day trips. This allowed for our guides to fall back in love with Scotland’s scenery all over again after the break. This made the year 2022, the season of day trips from Edinburgh.

Now we look ahead to the year of 2023 and this season we are quickly selling out availability in the summer months of our multi-day tours. These are great tours to explore Scotland to its fullest, even spending nights in the Scottish Highlands and Islands. This year is looking like it is going to be the season full of Multi-Day Tours. This is great for us as each season is different which keeps our guides fresh and helps them rediscover areas of Scotland they may not have had the opportunity to share on tour for a long time.

With many Multi-Day Tours being booked Edinburgh Tour Guides have a busy February with lots of different activities before the tour such as - planning itineraries, booking admissions, recommending hotels, restaurants and more to our clients. Speaking of our recommendations, we have to continually maintain our high standards as a company and as such our recommendations must meet a similar high standard to us. What this means is we have to stay up to date with a large variety of restaurants and accommodation all over Scotland. To do this, in the quieter months, our guides follow tour routes getting to sample great Scottish cuisine and spend nights in some beautiful accommodation. Some guides even lucky enough to get to spend time away in some of Scotland’s Castles.

One of the new hotels we stayed at was Tulloch Castle Hotel. This hotel is also a castle and is full of history. Originally the home of Clan Davidson (and links to Bayne). Some parts of the castle even dates back to 1100’s. On the grounds of Tulloch Castle there is a museum in the old Game larder which details the history of the Davidson Clan. Another historic part of the castle is the dungeon which you can still go in and visit. In here is a secret tunnel which stretches from Tulloch Castle across town all the way to Dingwall Castle, however some of the tunnel is now collapsed and it is no longer in use. We were given an intimate tour of the Castle and history at night, which was full of stories, history, ghosts and fascinating castle secrets. Speaking about all the history of the Castle, I almost forgot to mention how lovely the hotel aspect of the castle is. The rooms were beautiful, beds were comfortable, there was great food and the staff were amazing and so helpful.

We also made the decision this year to upgrade our current fleet of vehicles. Which has added to our busy February, because the vehicle we bought was located in... Wales! Although the UK is connected it is a whole different country, so Steve and Kyle set out on the journey travelling to Wales to collect our new vehicle in February. We decided to purchase a luxury vehicle that provides the perfect atmosphere for a private tour. We bought a Caravelle, this is great for the service we provide as it has comfortable leather seats, tinted privacy glass, electric doors, 3 zone A/C but also has the durability to explore the best and most hidden locations in Scotland. While our guides are out sampling great Scottish cuisine and accommodation they have also been getting used to the new vehicle ahead of a busy season.

So although summer may be the busier months in terms of the tours we carry out, we have been hard at work in this off-season making sure our recommendations and tour routes stay the best and most up-to-date to maintain our standards year on year. Looking ahead, we are excited to welcome in the spring and summer as we get to show off how beautiful Scotland is to travellers from all over the world.

          December with Edinburgh Tour Guides

Here at Edinburgh Tour Guides, the winter months are usually the quieter ones. However, that has not been the case this year. December has been full of tours, markets, events and activities for us.

One of our guides, Sam, is very talented not only in tours but also in the creation of hand made artisan soaps, hand creams and more. Sam has been at the Castle Street market every day in December selling her artisan soaps. Through the rain, sun, snow and ice Sam has been selling her hand made products locally and to travellers enjoying the Edinburgh Christmas Markets. There are some lovely markets around Edinburgh, The Christmas markets, Castle Street Market and The Grassmarket Market. These markets are a really fun way to find those special Christmas gifts for all the family while supporting local marketers.

Edinburgh Tour Guides was also lucky enough to be invited by The Lyceum to an early showing of “An Edinburgh Christmas Carol”. This was a great show that the whole team enjoyed and is a great adaption of “A Christmas Carol” to include Edinburgh’s locations and characters (of course we love that being from Edinburgh). A show that the we would highly recommend. Without giving anything away… there is a lovely surprise at the end of the show ❄️

December, although a Christmas month, is also Kyle’s birthday month. Edinburgh Tour Guides were happy to wish Kyle a happy birthday this month. He was lucky enough to spend his birthday partying into old age over the weekend, as well as this it snowed all day on his birthday (Kyle loves the snow).

Edinburgh in the festive period really is a beautiful time, although it is a cold winter month, Edinburgh is a vibrant city full of life. The Christmas markets, outdoor ice rink, Christmas lights and decorations, really bring Edinburgh to life around Christmas time. Now we look forward to bringing in Christmas and the New Year

Eilean Donan Castle: One of Scotland's most recognisable Castles.

The name Eilean Donan, or island of Donan, probably comes from the 6th century Irish Saint, Bishop Donan who came to Scotland around 580 AD. In the early 13th century the first defensive structure was built on the island. The castle played a part in the Jacobite risings which ultimately resulted in its destruction. It lay in ruins for around 200 years until the island was purchased by Lt Colonel John Macrae-Gilstrap in 1911.

Lt Colonel John Macrae-Gilstrap and his Clerk of Works, Farquar Macrae, spent the next 20 years rebuilding the Castle to her former glory. The castle was rebuilt according to surviving ground plans and was completed in the July of 1932. The Castle walls are 14feet thick and the island has its own fresh water supply.

I have a passion for Scotland and it's rich tapestry of history. Like the many different tartans and kilts which form our national dress, the tales of our past are equally colourful. I specialise in Private Tours in my home town of Edinburgh a World Heritage Site, together with the attractions in the surrounding area.

I was born, raised and educated in this unique city but it was not until I returned after working in other cities that I came to appreciate what was here. My many years working in the design and installation of air conditioning and ventilation In shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants gives me an extensive knowledge of the range, quality and value available in the city and surrounding area which I am happy to pass on to my clients.

All my tours (except Harry Potter and Edinburgh and The Edinburgh of Adam Smith) are carried out wearing my kilt. In a recent referral from a client he stated that it was interesting to watch other tour groups rushing to photograph his private guide.

I amuse, educate and entertain by combining history with stories of people and places that we view. My Tours are easily modified for the less mobile, or to incorporate any special requirements.
